4 Signs That Your Car's Transmission Needs To Be Repaired

Blog

If the transmission of your car hasn't been regularly serviced, it may be time to have it checked. Even if the car has received scheduled maintenance, there are signs that the transmission of your car has begun to fail. If these signs arise, it is important to have the transmission inspected by a trained mechanic as soon as possible. Here are a few indications that the transmission of your car is experiencing problems:

Low Transmission Fluid Levels

Low levels of transmission fluid can cause the transmission of your car to have inadequate lubrication and conditioning to function properly.  As a result,  the engine may seize and fail to operate at all. Low fluid levels can be verified by checking the dipstick in the transmission fluid reservoir.

Transmission fluid is bright red in color. If there is a leak in your vehicle, you may notice a puddle of this fluid underneath your car after your car has been parked for a prolonged period. However, if your car is parked on asphalt, it may be difficult to recognize the red hue against the black pavement.

If you suspect that transmission fluid is leaking but need to verify the color of the substance, simply place a sheet of newspaper, a white trash bag or a piece of white paper beneath your vehicle overnight. If red fluid appears on the paper or garbage bag, you have a transmission fluid leak that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Smell of Smoke

As the transmission fluid in your car reaches dangerously low levels, the transmission of your vehicle is likely to overheat. This can result in a burning odor coming from your car. A smoky smell may be caused by the sludge and debris withing the transmission burning.

Your Car Won't Go into Gear

If you position the gear shift of your car to drive or reverse, and you notice that your car will not move accordingly, there's likely a problem with your transmission. The delay in responsiveness can be caused by worn gears that are unable to engage quickly or properly. However, failure to respond to a gear assignment can also be caused by the computer system of your car or truck. Thus, it is important to have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic to determine the source of your problem.

The Engine Light is On

The check-engine light that is located in the dashboard panel of your vehicle can be triggered by unusual activity in the transmission.  The sensors that relay information to the engine light may detect vibrations or other movements that are unusual for the transmission. Once the engine light appears, it is best to have the car checked as soon as possible.

If you believe that the transmission in your car may be failing,  schedule an appointment with a mechanic in your area as soon as possible for transmission repair
